The options at a glance
- Shared or private transfer: door to door, but fixed schedules or a separate trip for the return, and you have no car once you arrive.
- Bus: the cheapest way to cover the distance, but you still need a taxi from the terminal to your hotel and you depend on departure times.
- Rental car: more freedom and the only option that also lets you visit cenotes, Akumal, Tulum or Puerto Morelos on your own schedule.
When a rental car makes the most sense
- You plan at least two day trips outside Playa.
- You travel with three or more people, where the cost per person drops.
- You carry a lot of luggage or equipment.
- Your hotel is outside the center, in Playacar or along the corridor toward Puerto Morelos.
If you only stay in the center and walk everywhere, the car may sit unused; a transfer can be enough.
How to rent at Cancun Airport and return in Playa
